Brian and I wrote this one in my backyard while jamming on our acoustic guitars. It was a lot of fun and it ended up writing itself. We wondered what the lyrics should be for a while and then I found an old poem I had written called "Everything is Dry" and it worked perfectly. This was the first song of the four we wrote and we think it sets the mood for what's to come after.

I wrote the poem "Everything is Dry" during fire season in California.
There was ash everywhere and the local high schools and colleges even all the way up in the Bay Area had to close for a couple weeks because of the terrible air pollution from the smoke. It's just too bad PG&E hasn't learned their lesson yet and California is on fire again.

The earth we walk on is thirsty
Its rivers are evaporating
Our minds are droughts
Barren wastes of stale ideas
Our forests are on fire
The water drained out of their roots
And the leaves
On which we inscribe our morals
On which the foundations of humanity rests
